LLETZ
Each year, London Gynaecology supports hundreds of women through the management of abnormal cervical smear results. While many cases do not require treatment and resolve with monitoring, some patients with higher-grade abnormalities may need a procedure known as LLETZ (Large Loop Excision of the Transformation Zone). This treatment is used to safely remove abnormal cells from the cervix and prevent them from developing into more serious conditions.

Vulval Cancer
The vulva is the external part of the female genitalia, and although vulval cancer is rare, it is important to recognise and treat it early. Some vulval cancers develop from a precancerous condition known as VIN (vulval intraepithelial neoplasia), which can be managed to reduce the risk of cancer developing.
Vaginal Cancer
Vaginal cancer is the rarest of the gynaecological cancers and is diagnosed in 250-300 women a year in the UK, with over 70% of diagnoses in women over 60. Vaginal cancer is a skin cancer which is caused by a cell changing its growth pattern, causing it to increase in size each time it replicates. Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection is one of the main causative factor.
Ovarian Cancer
Ovarian cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the ovaries, the reproductive organs that produce eggs and hormones such as oestrogen and progesterone. It occurs when abnormal cells in the ovary begin to grow uncontrollably and may spread to other parts of the body if not detected early.
Endometrial Cancer
Known as womb cancer or cancer of the lining of the uterus. The lifetime risk of a getting endometrial cancer is 1 in 100 (1%) and peak incidence is after menopause in 50s and 60s, hence it’s important for women in the menopause to be aware of the signs and symptoms. High BMI, diabetes and blood pressure also increase the risk of this type of cancer.
Vulvoscopy
A vulvoscopy is an examination of the vulval skin using a telescope. It is performed for the investigation of vulval itching or pain or irritation and to rule out pre-cancer of the vulva. The examination does not hurt but the application of the stain may cause a stinging sensation. The examination is performed in less than 5 minutes.
HPV
Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is a very common infection; 75-80% women (and men) get it at some stage in life. It usually produces no symptoms and many women will not even know that they have had the infection. Most women who have HPV will clear it as their immune system will be able to tackle it – this can often take one to two years. If HPV lingers on, it can sometimes lead to abnormal cells developing on the cervix. These abnormalities are picked up on routine smear tests.

PMS & PMDD
PMDD stands for Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder and is characterised by severe psychological and physical symptoms that start before a few days to two weeks before the period and improve during periods.
Adenomyosis
Adenomyosis is a common but under-recognised condition characterised by an enlarged uterus due to infiltration of the uterine lining into the muscle wall. During menstruation, this adenomyotic tissue also swells up and bleeds within the uterine wall which can cause severe period pain, cramps and heavy periods.
HPV Vaccination
he vaccine is relevant for all women, ideally carried out before sexual debut but as the vaccine protects against all 4 strains and only 1% of women are exposed to all four types it is likely that 99% of women are likely to benefit from this vaccination.

Hysterectomy
A hysterectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the uterus. It may be recommended to treat fibroids, heavy bleeding, endometriosis, or other gynaecological conditions. After a hysterectomy, you will no longer have periods or be able to become pregnant.
Bartholin’s Cysts
Bartholin’s glands are small pea sized glands at the entrance of the vagina, behind the lips (labia minora). Secretions of these glands provide some of the lubrication during sexual intercourse.
Open Myomectomy
Myomectomy (Myoma = fibroids, ectomy = removal) literally means surgical removal of fibroids. This is the procedure of choice for women who have symptomatic fibroids and do not wish to have a hysterectomy
Uterine Fibroid Embolisation
Uterine artery embolisation for fibroids is a minimally invasive procedure that involves blocking the blood supply to Uterine Fibroids, causing them to shrink and alleviate related symptoms.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

Cervical cancer arises from the cervix, the lower part of the uterus connecting to the vagina. In the UK, approximately 3,200 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year. Early detection through regular cervical screening (smear & HPV tests) and HPV vaccination plays a crucial role in prevention.

Ovarian Cysts
Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled cysts commonly seen within ovaries. The cysts can vary in size and range from a few millimetres to tens of centimetres. Many ovarian cysts are asymptomatic but some can produce symptoms such as pain.

The official term for heavy periods is menorrhagia, meaning an above average or prolonged level of bleeding in a menstrual cycle. Bleeding during an average period is supposed to be around 80ml (less than half a cup), but a lot of women experience more bleeding than this.
